Mauna Loa Eruption
Mauna Loa Eruption
History is being made (again) on the Island of Hawaii, just in time to celebrate the Holidays!!! Sunday, 11/27/2022 at 11:30 PM Mauna Loa, planet earth’s largest shield volcano, began erupting for the first time since 1984. Ending its longest quiet period in history. For the past 3 nights now, we have been blessed with a magnificent glowing night sky with vibrant reds & bright hues of orange, shooting lava splatters high into the air, while rivers of lava flows down the mountainside. The good news is that the lava flows are not threatening any downslope communities and all indications are that the eruption will remain in the Northeast Rift Zone. Our clients this week have been blessed with TWO different eruptions happening simultaneously; Kiluaea & Mauna Loa!!! This is such an exciting time to go exploring with Akamai Adventures!!!
Current Mauna Loa Eruption Update for 11/30/22:
The Northeast Rift Zone eruption of Mauna Loa continues, with two active fissures feeding lava flows downslope. The fissure 3 lava flows are travelling to the northeast, though the direction shifted slightly westward overnight, still moving towards Saddle Road. Fissure 3 is the dominant source of the largest lava flow, and the flow front is about 3.6 miles (5.8 km) from Saddle Road as of 7 a.m. HST this morning. The flows have been advancing at a rate of 0.08 miles per hour (130 meters per hour) over the last day, but they are approaching a relatively flat area and will begin to slow down, spread out, and inflate. Forecasts indicate it may take two days for lava flows to reach Saddle Road! This Update was provided to you by the HAWAIIAN VOLCANO OBSERVATORY
